| We just returned from the Big Island and spent half of our trip at "Kanaloa at Kona", 6 miles south of the town of Kailua-Kona on the ocean. Very nice condo development with tennis courts and 3 pools. No beach, just lava shoreline like many areas on the Big Island. We rented a 3 bedroom/2 bath condo directly facing a golf course, but with mountains and ocean visible from one of the two lanais. Very spacious and clean, nicely decorated and extremely well-equipped, even down to beach gear. We paid $159 a night, and $15/day extra when we used the air conditioning, which we never needed at night. The rate was SO reasonable that we kept thinking it was a mistake. We rented directly from the owner and found the listing on the web site www. .VRBO. .com (vacation rentals by owner) listed under Kailua-Kona. Do not rent these units through Outrigger Resorts, though, because you will pay a LOT more! The owner's name was Ray Hinton but I am not sure of the listing number. Search by number of bedrooms. This same owner also has a 2-bedroom in the same complex. |

Hello-
I recently spent time on the Big Island and have a comment on the "cockroach" problem. Myself actually a native of the subtropics (Gulf region of south Texas) have seen and unfortunately lived in areas with large bugs.
While vacationing I did see a tiny (2cm) roach in my room in Waikiki, no big deal. On Kona I stayed in this lovely A. .C. luxe accomodation. Any bug that dared venture our room would be freezed by 65 degree room temp; poor survival.
However this changed when I went to E. Hawaii and stayed at an apartment building studio. Though not crawling with 1 inch size roaches there was a resident roach that lived in the cupboard. It would appear when food was being reheated in the microwave or at night.
I battled this roach for a few days and ultimately I concluded that it was not going to ruin my vacation. Though at this place I did sleep with the lights on and anointed my bed nightly with eucalyptus base bug repellent.
